The practical training for 2nd-year students of the second (Master's) level of higher education belongs to the general training cycle and is carried out in accordance with “Regulations on the Procedure for Conducting Internships for Students of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”.

Subject volume            420 hours (14 credits): independent study 420 hours. Assessment: pass/fail.

The aim of the practice – to master modern information technologies for the development of complex software systems while consolidating and expanding theoretical knowledge.

Practice task - gain practical skills

  • design and creation of information systems;
  • processing very large data arrays;
  • visualisations of graphical and geometric information;
  • work with modern high-performance distributed computing systems and distributed databases in energy complexes;
  • Use and creation of software documentation.

This educational component is mandatory in the educational programme; its completion aims to shape, develop and consolidate in the recipients such заgeneral and professional competencies:

  • Ability to think abstractly, analyse and synthesise.;
  • The ability to apply knowledge in practical situations.;
  • The ability to communicate in the state language, both orally and in writing;
  • The ability to learn and master modern knowledge;
  • The ability to be critical and self-critical;
  • The ability to generate new ideas (creativity);
  • The ability to formalise the subject area of a specific project in the form of a relevant information model.;
  • The ability to use mathematical methods to analyse formalised models of a subject area;
  • The ability to develop, describe, analyse and optimise architectural solutions for information and computer systems of various purposes.;
  • The ability to develop software in accordance with defined requirements, taking into account available resources and constraints;
  • Ability to develop and implement software development projects, including in unpredictable conditions, with unclear requirements and the need to apply new strategic approaches, and to use software tools for organising teamwork on a project.;
  • The ability to assess and ensure the quality of IT projects, and information and computer systems for various purposes, to apply international standards for assessing the quality of software for information and computer systems, and models for assessing the maturity of development processes for information and computer systems.;
  • The ability to initiate, plan, and implement the development processes for information and computer systems and software, including its development, analysis, testing, system integration, implementation, and support.

During their training, students must demonstrate the following Learning outcomes:

  • possess specialised conceptual knowledge, including the latest scientific achievements in the field of computer science, which forms the basis for original thinking and research, critical consideration of problems in the field of computer science and at the interface of knowledge domains;
  • to possess specialised computing science problem-solving skills necessary to conduct research and/or undertake innovative activity with the aim of developing new knowledge and procedures;
  • To clearly and unambiguously convey one's knowledge, conclusions, and reasoning in the field of computer science to specialists and non-specialists, particularly to learners.;
  • managing complex, unpredictable information technology workflows that require new strategic approaches;
  • to design architectural solutions for information and computer systems of various purposes;
  • create new algorithms for solving problems in the field of computer science, evaluate their effectiveness and limitations on their application;
  • to evaluate and ensure the quality of information and computer systems for various purposes;
  • Identifying the needs of potential customers regarding information processing automation.;
  • to conduct research in the field of computer science.

For successful completion of the internship, it is necessary to have basic knowledge of the following general preparation cycle disciplines: “Intellectual Property and Patent Law”, “Practical Course of Foreign Language for Business Communication”, “Development of Startup Projects”, as well as the general preparation cycle disciplines: “Intellectual Property and Patent Law”, “Practical Course of Foreign Language for Business Communication” and the professional training cycle: “Processing of Very Large Data Arrays”, “High-Performance Distributed Computing Systems in Energy Complexes”, “Visualisation of Graphic and Geometric Information”, “Post-Relational Databases”, “Design of Distributed Database Systems in Energy”, “Methods of Virtual Reality Synthesis”. The knowledge and skills acquired by students are used in the completion of their master's thesis.

During the pre-graduation internship, the student must prepare the necessary information materials for completing the diploma thesis, familiarise themselves with the capabilities of the enterprise's software resources (the internship base), in particular, familiarise themselves with and analyse the specialised software systems developed and implemented at this enterprise, which are similar in purpose to the system being developed in the bachelor's diploma thesis, familiarise themselves with literature and software documentation available at the enterprise concerning the diploma thesis topic, compare the enterprise's software systems with the one being developed in the diploma thesis, analyse the possibility of adapting the created system for its application at the internship base, create a software product according to the diploma thesis topic (develop an algorithm, write program code, test and debug the developed software product) and apply the knowledge gained during the internship in the diploma thesis.

As pre-diploma practical training is the final practical training within the educational process, particular attention from enterprise and department supervisors should be focused on enabling students to select and analyse information material, and to gain experience in solving specific tasks.

During the internship, the student must adhere to the internal regulations of the organisation where the internship is taking place, undergo a health and safety briefing, become familiar with the workplace, and the equipment operating procedures.

When completing an internship remotely, all documents are processed electronically, and communication between the student and supervisors from the educational institution and the internship base takes place by phone, email, or other means of communication.

The description of the educational component “Practical Training”, its aims and results, prerequisites and postrequisites, information on the organisation of the practical training, learning materials, policies, forms and methods of assessment, and requirements for the report content and assessment criteria are provided in Syllabuses.

The internship report is prepared by the student in accordance with the internship programme and individual assignment. When writing the internship report, one must adhere to the guidelines provided in Syllables requirements for the report content, as well as recommendations for formatting, which are contained in the methodical development: Shapovalova S.I. Preparation of Reporting Documentation. 2022. 9 pp.

Student practice locations

The university offers students studying for the specialty 122 - “Computer Science” a placement for their practical training and has pre-existing agreements with the following organisations:

  • V.M. Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine;
  • Institute of Problems of Mathematical Machines and Systems;
  • State Enterprise “National Energy Company “UKRENERGO”;
  • The National Commission for State Regulation of Energy and Utilities of Ukraine;
  • Institute of Renewable Energy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

If a student wishes to undertake an internship elsewhere, it is possible provided that the internship location aligns with their field of study and can facilitate the completion of the work programme and individual internship assignment. In such cases, the NN IATE enters into Agreements with these organisations for students to undertake their internships. Such agreements must be concluded no later than 10 days before the commencement of the internship, and the Work Programmes (Syllabi) must be agreed and signed by the parties no later than 2 months before students commence their internships.

Part-time students undertake their practical training at their primary place of employment.

An individual calendar plan, including the calculation of time required to complete individual tasks related to the thesis topic, is drawn up by each supervisor in addition before the start of the practical training.

Individual practical assignments must be related to the topics of master's theses. The content of an individual assignment must correspond to both the objectives of the educational process and the needs of production, taking into account the capabilities and proposals of the practical training base. Individual practical assignments are approved at a department meeting and issued to each student before the start of practical training.

The results of the internship are used in the completion of the Master's thesis.
