Broadened Horizons and Friends from Different Countries: DTE Student Uliana Yeshchenko on Her Semester in Germany

Uliana Yeshchenko, a student of the Department of Digital Technologies in Energy (DTE), studied at Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM, Germany) from 22 September 2025 to 12 March 2026. During her mobility she was a third-year student of the Educational and Research Institute of Atomic and Thermal Energy (group TR-31).

Uliana studied on the Business Informatics programme, which corresponds to the specialty “Computer Science”. She was enrolled in the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Data Processing (MND) and also attended courses of the faculties of computer science and business and of the Language Centre. All exams were passed successfully, with more than 30 credits earned in total.

Courses Uliana studied:

  • Information and Data Management (6 credits): databases, Big Data, SQL, MongoDB. In practical classes, students designed databases and wrote scripts. The course combines business value with technical implementation.
  • Fundamentals of Corporate Cybersecurity and IT Security (6 credits): encryption algorithms at different levels of protection — in the browser, in digital signatures and in sent messages.
  • IT Adoption and Change Management (6 credits).
  • Web Technologies (6 credits): lectures covered theory, while in practical classes students wrote code and chose the best approach.
  • German as a Foreign Language, level A1 (5 credits), and an evening German course, level A2 (3 credits).

The host university also took care of informal communication: for exchange students it organised a get-together at a bar, a welcome evening and an excursion to another city with the German language teacher.

“The Business Informatics programme allowed me to look at information technology through the lens of business processes, which greatly broadened my understanding of the Computer Science specialty,” Uliana says in her report.

According to her, taking part in university events helped her integrate into the European student community, overcome the language barrier and make friends from different countries, which developed soft skills important for the modern IT industry.

The DTE Department congratulates Uliana on completing her mobility and invites students who plan to study abroad to visit the page Academic mobility.
